WP2: Optimising OSI for translation and use in diverse settings

The Icelandic OSI translation revealed the need for a more efficient, cost-effective multilingual system. To scale internationally we must also upgrade the platform with improved translation tools. While OSI works across devices, optimising for smartphone-only use is crucial for scalability, especially in LMICs where smartphones are often the primary internet access point.

Technical work will include:

  1. i. Angular upgrade to secure long-term support (and sustainability) and to optimise for access via smartphone.
  2. ii. Decoupling code and OSI text to streamline the language translation process.
  3. iii. Incorporating an initial AI-based translation system and improving the inbuilt editor so that local experts can verify/adjust the text to meet cultural requirements.
  4. iv. Enabling a single version of OSI to allow switching between multiple languages.
  5. v. Improving technical training and deployment processes to enable local software engineers to deploy OSI efficiently.
  6. vi. Developing an easy to translate e-learning platform to support scalable practitioner training (building on the team’s extensive experience of CBT training for professionals with diverse backgrounds).
